Remote Control Cars – A Toy Or A Real Hobby

May 16, 2010

Many people look at Radio Control Cars as just toys and sometimes they are near the truth.

The main reason for that is that Radio Controlled Toys have in the past couple of years got

a LOT better in quality and even in performance.

This is not to say that Hobby grade Model “RC” ( radio control) Cars have lagged behind as they are certainly much more like driving a real car or truck than they were even 2 years ago.

There is not such a fine line any more between Radio Control Toys and Hobby Grade cars.

Both are available as either 4 wheel drive or all terrain vehicles or as racetrack style cars for use on flatter surfaces or even paving stones perhaps even indoors.

The main differences now are on the engines and for toys these are usually electric and

are powered mainly by AA or rechargeable batteries.

One thing to watch for is the difference between

Radio Control and Remote control remote control is usually a wire going from the car to the controlling handset whereas a Radio Control Car is not connected physically but commands are given by a wireless connection from free wireless transmitter handset to a receiver inside the car or truck.

Toy Cars are sometimes looked down on by some people in the Hobby communities but if people derive pleasure from toy grade cars then I am in favour of that.

Recently Toy cars come with much more durable bodies as makers know that some users like to stage collisions ! (But like their cars to work afterwards)

Hobby Grade Radio Control cars are pretty much always Radio Controlled.

Older models may be remote control.

These are sometimes very collectible.

One of the big differences is that Hobby Grade Cars are repairable in case of damage while many toy grade cars will just have to be patched us as best as the owner can manage. Spares are very rarely available for Toy Grade cars.

This is because Hobby grade cars now are mainly capable of being upgraded and spare parts are generally easily available.

The reason for this is that hobby grade cars often need tuning or the owners want to add

flashy new exhaust pipes, steering units or other great addons .

This is one of the ways that Hobby Car makers use to make extra income.

They supply a demand but sometimes supplies coming from the Far East take a while to arrive.

Electric cars are some of the cheapest and have minimal servicing needs like minor cleaning and replacing worn parts.

They are probably the best starter cars for a novice driver and are generally quite durable.

Electric cars are now supplied mainly with “brushless” engines and some earlier ones can be upgraded.

Nitro Cars have real small combustion engines – a miniaturized version of car engines although they run on special fuel based on Nitromethane,Methanol and oil – supplied usually by hobby stores.

These engines are known as Glow Plug engines and the cars powered by them can reach quite high speeds.

The engines can be replace often with larger capacity ones that supplied by the maker . These do however need a bit more maintenance as the fuel does spray around a little and they also need tuning.

It is much easier for the novice to buy a pre-tuned car in this category

These are known as Ready To Run cars.

Generally the Nitro cars are about 20 percent bigger than Electric Cars due to the

glow plug engines and they are much faster. (There are actually many different cars available and the crossover between electric and Nitro Cars in output is sometimes similar).

The next grade up is Hobby grade cars with real engines – these are known as “Gassers” or “Fuelies” and have much bigger engines similar in size to brush cutter engines and with a corresponding increase in power.

These are for the real enthusiast and cost much more than Nitro or Electric models.

Cars for Racing have very specific requirements for engine size and other needs.

You will always receive a transmitter handset with your radio control car and a manual.

Keep the manual safe – you WILL need it.

Second user cars are popular as many users upgrade.

Always make sure you get the manual and an assurance that the car will not be “DOA” (dead on arrival!).

If the car is not functioning properly then get your money back.

It is a good idea if buying at auction to always use Paypal which covers you for up to $500 in this case or in the case of nondelivery.

Panasonic Digital Camera – Get Animated About The Digital DMC-FZ5!

May 15, 2010

When Panasonic Digital Cameras introduced their Lumix DMC-FZ5 they brought some real color competition into play for this class of camera!

On the one hand this Panasonic digital camera is a real step up from its predecessor – the DMC-FZ3 – in terms of color accuracy. On the other hand it also outperforms many cameras in its type and price group when it comes to true color rendition.

As such – and incorporating the same Leica-branded DC Vario-Elmarit zoom with its 12x optical range as the DMC-FZ3 – this digital camera is a serious contender in the higher-end prosumer market, as Panasonic digital camera reviews point out. This lens system contributes to a very good image resolution.

Having said that, expert consumer photographers might very well expect to be able to manipulate those colorful image files in RAW format, whereas the DMC-FZ5 only supports TIFF.

One of the most appreciated features of the Panasonic Digital Camera DMC-FZ5 is its highly effective Mega Optical Image Stabilization system. It comes with two modes of which the first offers continuous image stabilization, which is said to assist during image composition.

The second mode – which reportedly is even more effective, only comes into play during the actual release of the shutter.

This Panasonic digital camera also features a real-time histogram, which is always welcome on a digital camera. This ensures that you get a balanced exposure and not blow away the highlights! It is a challenge to learn how to interpret a histogram instinctively in the field, but worth the effort for the improved results you will be getting.

A handy feature highlighted in Panasonic digital camera reviews, is the ability of the DMC-FZ5 to record sound with still images. If you have a number of similar objects to record, the 5 second sound input can help you make sense of your pictures afterwards!

As far as power consumption is concerned, the Panasonic Digital Camera DMC-FZ5 has a sleep mode to conserve power, and will then retract the zoom lens. It can be set to come into action after 1-10 minutes, or when you press any button. It uses a proprietary rechargeable battery, with a charger included. Battery life is longer than with its DMC-FZ3 predecessor.

If you’re tired of serious photography and want to play around a bit, this Panasonic digital camera offers you an animation feature. It lets you take a number of sequential-movement stills which you can then transform automatically into a movie sequence.

So if you or the kids have some clay lying around, this feature could keep everyone suitably amused for an afternoon…

If not, it will be just as easy to enjoy hours of entertainment discovering all the superb features of the DMC-FZ5 Panasonic Digital Camera.

Read Sea of Poppies on Amazon Kindle

May 15, 2010

Every once a while comes a story that transports you back in time, creates an imagery so vivid that the reader feels a part of the turbulence in the lives of characters thrown together by circumstances. Amitav Ghosh’s Sea of Poppies is all that and more.

There is a widow from a remote village in Bihar with her low caste lover, a disgraced royal, a cocky servant boy and the orphaned daughter of his european master, an American sea-man with a mysterious past, an array of sailors, stoaways, convicts and many such intriguing personalities, all aboard the Ibis, a ship sailing to Mauritius from Calcutta. Diverse as the motley crew may sound, there is a string of thread that ties all their lives together. And Gosh weave that thread with great mastery. One that stands out out among the bevy of characters is the zamindar’s gomusta, Baboo Nob Kissin. a caricature av best!

A Krishna follower who seeks reincarnation of his beloved god in the American sailor Zachary. Sure of finding his clubtin with his new found god, he somehow manages to find a space on the ship and what follows is hilarious. Amitav has delicately sculpted this character with just the right amount of humor and without an iota of deprecation or disdain.

Amitav also does not give in to the temptation of mentioning the freedom movement even in the passing. Instead, he sticks to his canvass, describing in great detail the lucrative opium and slave trade between India and Britain, dynamics of the Asian economy in those times, the tightly drawn carte lines and rigid social customs. So all in all, Sea of Poppies is an intricately woven tale and Amitav deliberately leaves a few end loose. After all, it’s the first of a trilogy! With such a glorious start, it’s for sure that the tale unravelling over next twoan will be just as mesmerising. That the book did not win the Man Booker does not take away anything or even add to the fact that Amitav Ghosh is a marvellous, elegant and master story-teller. This is a must read on your Amazon Kindle. You can buy this book for you kindle from Amazon and probably download it directly to your Amazon Kindle.

HD100 Digital Radio News and Reviews

May 14, 2010

The HD100 is a 2.2-pound compact receiver with built-in speakers. It has a play-through auxiliary input, a headphone jack and an alarm clock. AC power is required. The radio has an internal AM antenna and a pull-out FM antenna. Both can be replaced with external antennas. Because digital signals are limited to 1 percent of the power of a station’s analog transmission, HD receivers often need external antennas for clear sound on far-off signals.

A display screen shows station call letters, song and artist details and depending on the station; brief updates on traffic, weather, news and sports. With its low weight, telescoping antenna and ability to play music from devices like iPods, this radio might have a place on the beach; as long as there is a cord long enough to reach it.

With features like crystal-clear sound, no hissing sound, no distortions, many channels and unlike satellite radio they are free to use, your radio becomes a cheap digital radio. Again all of the features are FREE of charge. There’s no contract and no subscription fees, all you need is a new radio. The HD digital radio receiver will undoubtedly become the next generation radio. No wonder several people are making rave reviews about digital radios. Below are just a sample of such:

PUBRADIO, Ken Mills – August 2007: The Radiosophy HD100 is worth it – a good value for the price. It is an excellent “starter set” for a digital versions. Overall, I recommend it.

SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE, Ben Fong-Torres – July 2007: The reception and sound are better and clearer than what you get from the fancier Receiver. With its digital AM and FM signals, may sound better than conventional types, and stations may offer additional programming through sub- or side channels. But the make-or-break factor is the bottom line: What’s it going to cost? Up till now, the special tuners have been priced from $200 to $300 and more. The reception, you can imagine, has not been good.

Now Radiosophy has released a new model for $99.95. The model is the HD100, and it couldn’t look more different from, say, the Boston Acoustics Recepter ($249 before rebates). The Recepter is sleek, silver and compact, with a second speaker for stereo. Radiosophy’s model looks like a black boom box. You’d swear you could just pick it up and take it outside but, alas, you can’t. It requires AC power.

MSNBC, Gary Krakow – June 2007: The big news here is a product from a company named Radiosophy. Overall, this radio does exactly what it’s supposed to. It receives both analog and digital AM and FM radio stations and sounds pretty darned good doing so. I especially like the HD-only station scan feature, something its competitors lack. Of the three I’ve tested, the HD100 does the best job at grabbing digital signals with the provided FM antenna (a retractable metal whip).

THE NEW YORK TIMES, Glenn Fleishman – May 2007: A digital Radio that costs less than half its cheapest rival. The cost of receiving digital AM and FM signals will drop next week as Radiosophy releases its HD100 receiver for less than $60 with a rebate. This pulls in high definition radio signals, a digital format that is broadcast alongside standard radio by more than 1,200 stations in this country. The next least expensive digital receiver is $160 with a rebate; most start at $300.

MONITORING TIMES, Ken Reitz – April 2007: The HD100 could be the radio that will bring many buyers who have been put off by those higher prices into the world of digital reception.

Now you can get an enjoyable listening pleasure from your radio. Have a digital receiver and enjoy it’s crystal-clear sound. And they are now very affordable. Yes, they are cheap and unlike satellite radio, they are free to use. That’s right; you don’t need to sign any contract and or pay any subscription fees, all you need is the radio!

The "Flip Video" Camcorder – A Perfect Gift For Your Child

May 13, 2010

Looking for that perfect holiday gift idea for your child? Or maybe that elusive birthday gift that makes them jump with joy? I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of giving my kids a new toy that they soon forget about. Well, I found a great gift idea that your child will love! It’s called the “Flip Video” camcorder by Pure Digital Technologies Inc.

The Flip Video can record 60 minutes of color video at 640 x 480 resolution that is stored on its 1GB of internal memory. This means you won’t have to purchase new videotapes after 60 minutes of recording. With typical MiniDV camcorder tapes costing as much as $5.00 each, you’ll quickly see the benefits of having internal memory storage. Plus, the satisfaction of knowing that your child won’t lose or break these expensive tapes is just an added bonus.

The Flip Video camcorder was designed with the novice camcorder user in mind. Pure Digital claims that “it’s so easy a child can use it”. Oh boy; are they right! Weighing in at only 4.8 ounces and measuring 4.1 x 2.3 x 1.3 inches, this small wonder is capable of going anywhere you go. It can easily slip into a pant pocket or be tossed into your kids’ book bag. Although a little small, its 1 ½” color display is a good size for a camcorder with such petite dimensions. What really makes this camcorder so special is its simplicity. It has only four buttons and a directional pad.

Here’s a quick rundown of the Flip Video buttons:

1) Power Button- Pressing down on it for two seconds turns the unit on. Same goes for turning the camera off.

2) Play Button- Pressing the play button begins playback of the previously recorded video.

3) Delete Button – When pressed, you will be asked if you’d like to delete the previously recorded video. Press the button one more time to delete or the Play button to back out.

4) Record Button- This is the red button in the center of the directional pad. Click it once to begin recording. Click it again to stop. I told you it was easy!

5) Directional Pad- While recording, you can push up on the directional pad to utilize its 2X zoom or press down to zoom out. While in video playback mode, pressing left and right on the pad will cycle through the videos that are stored on the camera. Find the video you’re looking for and either press play to watch it or press delete to remove it from the cameras internal memory. **Note** Once you delete the video, you cannot retrieve it again for viewing. So be careful and make sure you select the correct video for deletion.

To watch a movie on a traditional camcorder, you have to break out the output cables that came with the camcorder, plug them into the camera, find the input jacks on your TV, plug in the cables and tune your TV to the proper input channel. As you can see, it’s not that easy. The Flip Video is the complete opposite. Just push down the little switch located on the side of the camera and “FLIP!” out comes the USB Connector. Plug the camera into any open USB port on your computer and watch the Flip Video open up the software that’s already stored on the camera. That’s it! Without the need to install software on your computer, you can immediately begin enjoying the movies you recorded. The Flip Video does come with a cable that enables you to plug the camera in to a TV just like a conventional digital camcorder. This accessory comes in handy when showing your videos to large group of people.

Here’s a list of features you’ll find on the Flip Video software:

1) Watch Videos- You can select any video that you recorded and watch it on your computers monitor.

2) Delete Videos- You can delete selected videos that are stored on the camera. Just highlight the video and click delete.

3) Save Videos- You have the options of saving to your computers hard drive or saving for email distribution. When you select the email option, the camera will automatically compress the video down to a smaller size. This comes in handy because most email accounts have size restrictions that do not allow large files to be accepted.

4) Make a Movie- You can piece together any movie that’s stored on the camera, add your own music and pick out a movie style. Click ‘Make Mix’ and the software will do the rest. It’s a nice way to make a compilation of your favorite video clips.

5) Email and Publish Videos- This is without question my favorite feature. You can email a private video to a friend or loved one. All you have to do is click ‘Share Greeting’, select an eCard design that the video will embed itself into, enter an email address and message to the recipient. Once you click ok, the software will convert the video to a smaller file size that is suitable for emailing. The recipient will receive an email with the eCard. All they have to do is click the card to watch the video. I can’t say enough about this wonderful feature! As an added bonus, you can also upload your videos to YouTube or AOL Videos for the whole world to see! All it takes is one click! With the YouTube revolution going on, your kids will LOVE this feature.

The video quality produced by the Flip Video is quit amazing for its price. Don’t get me wrong; you cannot compare a Flip video to one captured with a full-featured MiniDV or HD camcorder that can cost over $1,000. I like to compare the Flip Video to what a very good digital camera can produce when shooting in movie mode. I own a Canon SD800IS digital camera that costs over $300 and I can honestly say the Flip Video takes better videos.

I saved the best feature for last and that’s the price. You can purchase a 60 Minute Flip Video camcorder for under $120! If you feel $120 is a little too steep, you can always opt for the 30-minute model that costs roughly $89. I just gave my son the Flip Video for his fifth birthday and he absolutely loves it! Watching him run around the house taking videos of our family is priceless! Plus, when your little one is recording, you get to see the world from their point of view, which is really something special.

At this point, I’m sure you’re tired of hearing me rave about how great this little camcorder is. Well check out what the experts had to say about the Flip Video! Business Week was quoted as saying “A Sweet and Simple Camcorder“. The Detroit Free Press said “Amazingly High Quality Video” and the Wall Street Journal wrote “Startlingly good video, Indoors and Outside”. Pure Digital recently released the Flip Video “Ultra” with an enhanced feature set that looks to be even better than the original. The price tag is $40 more but I’m sure it’s worth it.

The bottom line is if you really want to surprise your kid with a great gift, you can’t do any better than the Flip Video camcorder. It will make your whole family smile!

Canon VIXIA HF100 Flash Memory High Definition Camcorder with 12x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

May 10, 2010

Canon VIXIA HF100 Flash Memory High Definition Camcorder with 12x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom Review

As my title says, I bought a used HF100 from a private seller.
He included in the deal:
* Canon WD-H37 II Wide Conversion Lens
* HF100 Remote control
* All the required cables + an HDMI cable for the HF100
* 3 extra Canon OEM batteries
* 16GB SD card
* Canon CG-800 Lithium Ion Battery Charger (not the charger with the cord)
* Hoodman HD-300 Video Camcorder Hood
Not a bad deal at all for a few bucks over 0!! And the HF100 performs like a champ. The previous owner took real good care of it. No blemishes at all on the HF100.
I’ve only had it a few days and I’ve shot some test vids. Converted the mts files using TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress. Results are very good, but takes a while for the conversion to complete.
I may have given the HF100 5 stars, but I’ve only had it a few days. I will reevaluate my rating when I have more experience using it. The only cons that I have now are less than desired battery life and the time it takes to convert the mts files… but I knew about the conversion requirements prior to purchasing. So no big deal. If you want true HD from a camcorder, you need to figure in the time required for the conversion process prior to purchasing a Canon HD camcorder. Be sure your PC’s guts can handle that conversion process without hiccups. And for true HD to be viewed on your home video setup, be sure to have a BlueRay burner and player, and of course a TV that can view HiDef.
—————————————————————————————-

After using this camcorder for almost a month, I’ve increased my original rating from 4-stars to 5-stars. I really like this camcorder. I’ve done indoor and outdoor videos and I’ve learned how to use this camcorder in the various lighting environments and get great results.

The Best Waterproof Video Cameras

May 9, 2010

Waterproof Video Cameras or waterproof camcorders can help you capture all of life’s fun and exciting moments in the water. Image being able take a video under water without your video camera being destroyed in the process, now that is amazing. There are a wide range of water proof cameras on the market today with brands like Sanyo Xacti, and many more. Finding a underwater camcorder that is right for you can be a little difficult if you do not know what to look for. So what you should look for before buying a waterproof camcorder? Well I will give you a list of things you should pay attention to before you buy any type of waterproof video camera.

Camcorder resolution: you should find out what type of resolution your Waterproof camcorder has weather Standard Definition (SD) or High Definition. For a better quality video a camcorder that captures HD video is the better choice.

Optical Zoom: a camcorder with more optical zoom (30x optical zoom ) takes a better quality video from farther away than a camcorder with less optical zoom (10x optical zoom) just to give you an example.

Waterproof depth: How deep your waterproof camcorder can go. You should always check this before you purchase your camcorder to see if the depth on it suites the activities you want to do with it.

Media Type/storage: This is the type of storage of video on your water proof camcorder. Here are the main types MiniDV Tape this is the old fashion way of storing video data. The quality is pretty good but it takes a while to transfer it from the tape to your computer. Hard Drive Storage this type can record many hours of video footage and you do not have to worry about changing tape, memory card or DVD when the drive is full. The drive can be erased and reused easily but the disadvantage is this type of storage makes the waterproof camcorder a little heavier and more sensitive to shock but this is still a great type. Flash Memory is the type of the future. This type is cheaper (more storage (GB) for your money), uses less power than the other types, it is small and takes less space. It is also good for taking pictures.

Battery life: the length of time your camcorder will work without having to be recharge. You do not want a camcorder that dies regularly in the middle of capturing great, once in a life time film.

Simplicity: You also do not want a camcorder that is complicated to operate. You want to be able to capture all your important shots in an instant. You do not want to be fiddling around to find the right settings and when you finally got them your shot is gone.

Image stabilization/ still images: This helps you to take better video when your Waterproof Video Camera is moving around. These eliminate some of the movement caused by your hands, body and the environment you are in (the waves in the ocean or by the wind).

How Online Data Storage Will Make Your Life Easier

May 9, 2010

Have you ever misplaced a backup CD or forgotten which files are on which disk? Online data storage services have made these problems obsolete. Now you can have backups done automatically while you sleep. This service is very easy on your budget, your data is safe and secure, and some providers make your data available to access from any computer. This article will explore some of the ways that online data storage can benefit you.

Online data storage offers easy file sharing and remote access of your data. You may want to store photos and share them with friends or use them in online auctions. I upload documents from my desktop computer at home and then the files are available for retrieval from my laptop when I am away from home or meeting with my business colleagues. You can provide links to your files and photos and your friends can download them when they want. If you’re on a tight budget, then this may be just what you’re looking for.

The service is very affordable. Some companies even offer a limited amount of storage completely free. As an example, a typical free account may include 2GB of storage which would hold about 1500 to 2000 photos. You can also find plans that will provide unlimited storage capacity for as low as $5.00 per month.

When you find a plan that fits your budget, you should rest easy knowing that your data is safe. Your files are uploaded using sophisticated encryption algorithms to keep them secure. Since your information is stored in a remote location, you will never again need to worry about a hard drive failure or CDs that get lost or damaged. If you operate a home business, this is a very attractive feature indeed.

Backing up your data has never been easier. You can chose which files you want stored and upload them with a few clicks, or you can chose automatic backup. Select the files you want to store or let the software suggest file types for you. Then the backups happen automatically and only new items or documents you have changed since the last backup are affected. No more trying to figure out which disk you stored last year’s Christmas photos on.

Statistics show that one out of ten hard drives fail each year. Backing up your data is essential, and if you don’t want the hassle of using CDs or the expense of buying a new hard drive, then online data storage is a very good alternative. If you are not sure about spending money on a service, then find a plan that offers free storage or a free trial period. Once you try this service, you will wonder how you ever got along without it.

LED TV is best for your viewing pleasure in high definition?

May 9, 2010

Of course, they are looking for new slim LED TV in abeyance and thus perform better than their predecessors, but we really believe that they are "better?" We also market, as has become standard business practice to roll out technology to consider any measures to increase revenue, will not you come out with a little plug?

The truth is that there are plans for even newer and better technological progress for the future. There have been enormous speculation aboutHD TV to get a 3D, if 'Avatar' is released on Blu-ray is now the plan so far. If your still looking at an old-fashioned tube TV and I am procrastinating waiting patiently for the latest high definition TV coming to you get to keep for years, like the wait is really over.

be the new LED TV is what should have been present when the thin widescreen televisions came out first, but it is there that the planned roll-out came into play. Already there is the technical1080p, but there is nothing that can keep up, not yet. Cable and satellite feeds only produce 720p and 1080i so, the only true HD Blu-ray. These LED-screen TV the dark depths of the plasma and the brightness of the LCD TV, so really the best one out there today. Apart from which the energy 40% less and do not produce heat can not say that about a plasma TV. The older LCD TVs could not simply produce dark colors and look when you tried to crank washedthe brightness too.

The LED lamp has been around for many years, have recently had a number of them in all different colors on your Christmas tree recently, the lights, which uses heat in the same way. For the LED-TV, each pixel has its own LED light, while some companies use the border to shoot the LED brightness across the screen on these special units are the thinnest of the group.

Let's look at what it can do a TV LEDand because it is considered the best.

They are cheaper in terms of energy consumption and produce less waste heat, thanks to the OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) LED technology. Be easier and more subtle in appearance so that they are less worried about him from the wall, if you live in an earthquake prone area. A gaping contrast ratio 2000000-1 (2,000,000 to 1) allows you to see everything in high definition, which looks more real life, will leave you in awe.

Theonly drawbacks are that it does everything and tell all, as a point of total despair. I was just a recent movie on Blu-ray players and could lead to look so alive got my attention from the film. face of the actor was encrusted with an orange-like make-up, while the arms and neck that were not on the make-up on stage ghostly white. Also took this dramatic film and made it look like a soap opera, now allowed me to extend this.
