Freelance Photography – How to Live With Rejections

March 21, 2010

It is a nasty word with all its implications of ‘failure’. But, it is a word that we as freelances have to get used to and accept it for what it really is, an indication of one editor’s opinion which could stem from a number of factors. He or she may not like the picture (which is their right), they may have another (in their mind) better picture of the same subject, they may have covered that subject recently, the picture doesn’t fit in with the magazine’s mission, and so on and so on. I am assuming, of course, that the picture is correctly exposed, clean, well composed and sharp.

Do remember that all judgments of art are subjective with opinions being formed taking into account the past history of the individual. I know of one photography judge who cannot abide pictures of pelicans. Why, I do not know. Maybe he was frightened by a pelican as a child, maybe he doesn’t like the long beak or the way they waddle when they walk but, more likely, he has seen too many pictures of these birds in the competitions he judges. Whatever the reason, a picture of a pelican will get short shrift from him. And, editors are only human and we have to accept that their judgment may have nothing to do with our photography being poor.

So what do we do when images are rejected or should I say, ‘not accepted on this occasion’?

What I do is to look carefully at them to make sure that there are no blemishes that I should have picked up and, assuming all is in order, I send them back out into the wide world to the next editor on my list. That way, I have no time to sit and fret about my ‘failure’.

Gifts They’ll Love – 12 Thoughtful, Memorable, Useful Gifts

March 20, 2010

Socks, shirts and sweaters — they do make useful gifts, but they’re boring.

Here are some GREAT gift ideas…

(In other words… How to make your girlfriend/boyfriend love you forever.)

GIFTS FOR HER

You can’t go far wrong with chocolates and flowers, but you can find gifts which are even better.

The trick to thoughtful, considerate, MEMORABLE gift giving is to give a gift which involves a little bit of work on your part. When she sees your gift and realizes the trouble you went to just for her, she’ll be impressed. Let’s face it — she may actually be amazed to discover that you’re not the inconsiderate slob she thought you were.

Here are some ideas for memorable gifts…

1. This is SO simple, but she’ll love it — and you, for being so thoughtful.

Give her a digital photo frame. But wait! That’s NOT the gift. Gather together a collection of your best pics of the two of you together (nice romantic ones) and load them into the photo frame. For years to come, every time she looks at those photos, she’ll love you a little bit more. You’ll keep winning points every day!

(An attractive photo album will make a good gift, too. Remember to fill it with pictures of the two of you together.)

What’s so convenient about this gift is that it doesn’t matter if she already has half a dozen digital photo frames or photo albums. It’s adding your own personal touch that makes YOUR gift so memorable.

She’ll love the fact that you went to a little bit of trouble to make this gift so special.

2. Give a promise. For this thoughtful gift idea, you’re limited only by your imagination — and by how well you know her.

Give her a nice card saying: “The owner of this card is entitled to a full body massage by…” and YOU be the one who gives her the full body massage. That’s a gift for two, right?

You could promise “an afternoon of pampering at XYZ Beauty Salon”.

Or your card could promise a romantic night in. Candles, a setting for two, and a meal cooked by you.

3. What if you don’t trust your own cooking? That’s OK. In the U.S., you can get delicious gourmet meals delivered to your door by GourmetStation.com. You can choose from various styles — Parisian, Cajun, Fusion, etc., and even get special Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners. What a fabulous gift.

4. Perfume is not very original, but think of the benefits… It’s a wonderfully effective gift because (a) women love perfume and (b) she’ll think of you every time the scent you gave her wafts into her nostrils. Think how often that is! So make sure to be VERY careful to buy her favorite brand or one very similar. Have a little chat with her best friend or sister and ask for tips.

5. Gift certificates. OK, I’ll admit this is a little bit boring, but a Gift Certificate is a very useful gift because you can 100% guarantee that she’s going to receive a gift she WANTS — because she’ll choose it. And it will fit.

6. Wine is a lovely gift. Think about it. What goes WITH a nice bottle of wine? Answer: A cozy, memorable meal for two while you sample your gift. And afterwards…? Well, that’s up to you. If you’re feeling specially generous, give her a Wine of the Month Club membership. Remember, gifts that keep on giving, keep her thinking of you. (A wine club membership can be a perfect gift for a man, too, for all the same reasons.)

Want to know what other gifts your girlfriend may like to receive? You can listen to hints she drops as her birthday or Christmas approaches, but it will probably be much more useful if you have a little chat with her best friend.

GIFTS FOR HIM

Men are basically simple. They like gifts they can eat or drink. Here are some ideas…

1. A Micro Beer of the Month Club membership. How could you possibly go wrong with a gift like this? He’ll think of you fondly every month when a new beer arrives to sample.

2. Most men love gadgets, too. Hugely popular right now is the Flip Mino HD camcorder/video camera. This tiny camcorder is super slim, super sleek, weighs only 3.3 ounces and yet it will take one hour of high-quality video. He can use the USB to plug it into his computer to recharge it, and connect it by cable to the TV to watch the videos on TV. Even if he hasn’t mentioned the Flip Mino, he WANTS this! You can have fun together using it.

3. A Cloud 9 Experience. Here’s something he’ll remember for the rest of his life — and remember the thoughtful person who gave it to him. It’s an extraordinary, special experience from Cloud9Living.com. Experiences range from ballooning, car racing, dune buggy rides and bungee jumping to more sedate but still memorable experiences such as wine tasting or a gondola cruise, and a whole lot of other adventure experiences. You can also choose a Cloud 9 experience you share together. Check it out. He’ll love this.

4. Times are tougher, now, right? But you don’t want to hand over money. Giving money is thoughtful but somehow misses the spot, doesn’t it? Here’s something better… Give him an investment in one of America’s big businesses. Think you can’t afford that? Don’t worry — OneShare.com specializes in selling ONE SHARE in each of a lot of large companies. This gift will remain a talking point for years to come — and he’ll think of you every time that big company is in the news. If it makes him think of you, it’s got to be a useful gift!

5. Steak. A man who doesn’t drool over a luscious, tender steak is rare indeed. Make his favorite dinner and turn it into a special occasion by candlelight. Sound too simple? Don’t be fooled. He’ll LOVE this!

6. Lobsters delivered. Show him how much you love him by ordering something really special. With any luck, you’ll get to share the delicious meal. You can order gourmet meals from GourmetStation.com — you job is to provide the candlelight and the romance. Enjoy!

Digital Camera Purchase Advice

March 20, 2010

Digital Camera has become a very popular consumer item, since it makes so easy and cheap to take pictures. However, some buyers are impulsive by nature and they are hardly aware of the standard features of digital cameras. Only after using the camera, they may realize its drawbacks. Therefore, it is important to know some standard features of digital cameras so that one can make the right decisions while buying this gadget.

The following are some standard features:

Computing Platform: Most digital cameras have interface compatibility with Mac as well as Windows operating system platforms. However, some cameras might have more software for one platform than the other, where as a few will work only on one platform. In this case, usually these cameras work on Windows platform.

Image Quality: It basically includes factors such as exposure accuracy, color purity, optics (lens) quality and image compression techniques.

Onboard Image Capacity: Whether a specific amount of onboard image capacity is sufficient or not depends largely on your application. Image capacity and image quality share a strong co-relation with each other. For instance, there is not point in having a digital camera that offers high image capacity whereas the amount of storage is not adequate in relation to the resolution. Beware of the cameras that promise a large number of images but lack actual storage space. It might affect the image quality of your photos. Standard onboard camera memory might range from 2 to 16 MB and the image storage capacity can vary from 10 to 100+ images, depending on the image resolution.

Reusable Memory Cards: There are quite a few digital cameras that allow storing images on plug-in cards and this enables users to add as much or as little memory to the camera as per individual requirement. Unlike the older version of memory card where a single type of memory card known as Liner PCMCIA was being extensively used, now memory cards can be found in different types. Some of the most popular cards are Compact Flash and FlashMedia.

Exposure Versatility: Digital cameras are unable to handle different lighting conditions. This drawback is not found in film cameras as we can compensate for different lighting situations by using different types of films. So, since the image sensor of a digital camera acts as a film, users find nearly impossible to change this setup. However, you can ensure that the digital camera you are buying has the ideal camera exposure system, such as shutter speed, variable lens opening and supplementary flash to handle a wide range of shooting conditions.

Other features:

Consider buying a waterproof camera as it can withstand moistures.

The camera you are buying should preferably have ISO support for crisper and cleaner images.

Go for higher mega pixel resolution cameras, which will offer you greater cropping ability. The higher the mega pixel resolution, the more one can enlarge his photographs. But don`t get too fussy about mega pixel resolution as it is not everything in a digital camera.

Look for pre-programmed scene modes in your camera which will take photos even in the tough and challenging lighting conditions.

While buying, focus more on optical zoom of a digital camera and not so much on the digital zoom. Optical zoom makes use of lens to get closer shots and delivers better images.

Finally, you have to be careful of not being lured into buying a camera with a `package deal` offer. What costs cheaper could also be cheaper in quality too! Digital cameras have made it easy for those who want to capture special moments. Now with so many features and affordable prices, digital camera have really become a world wide consumer product.

RAID Data Recovery – How It Works

March 19, 2010

RAID data recovery is probably one of the most complex processes any data recovery firm can perform. More often than not, the problems are compounded by the actions of the client prior to sending the drives in for recovery. Many users feel that it is important to try and recover the data themselves or repair the array through various system utilities, and this may be fine if the data is not critical. However, it has been our experience that when you have a RAID failure that has resulted in substantial data loss, more often than not, somebody’s job is on the line if that data is not recovered. The biggest piece of advise this article can provide in the event of a RAID failure: LEAVE IT ALONE.

IT professionals have a lot of pressure placed on them when a catastrophic system failure occurs. It is their job to make sure that all systems are up and running. Many times, out of panic, troubleshooting processes are initiated in order to correct the problem. Often times these processes only make a bad situation even worse, and in many instances they can render the data unrecoverable. Let’s keep in mind what this data can consist of in an average corporate environment. You are probably dealing with information that cost many hundreds of thousands of dollars in labor and resources to create. Much of the data probably can’t be duplicated. The intellectual value alone could be in the many millions of dollars. Corporate executives really don’t care to hear about how the failure occurred, or what unbelievable string of events led up to the server crashing. They don’t care to hear the technical jargon as you try to explain to them what happened, and hope they understand that it wasn’t your fault. They only want to know one thing…”why was this data not backed up, and how can we get it back?”

Instead of taking chances on your own, call a data recovery professional. RAID data recovery can be expensive, but in most cases it is much less costly than trying to recreate the data that has been lost. There is a set procedure that most data recovery professionals follow when it comes to performing any recovery work. These procedures are followed and expanded upon when dealing with a RAID recovery. The first step of any RAID recovery is to make sure all of the drives are functional. In order to properly complete the recovery it is essential that all drives are fully functional (this is especially true with a RAID 0). This may involve taking any physically damaged drives into the clean room, in order to make the necessary repairs so that they function normally again. Once that is completed the next step is to make complete, sector-by-sector clones of every drive. This is not “Ghosting”, but a very low-level process that allows the recovery technician to work around bad sectors, and have complete control over how the drive functions. During the cloning process, the original source drive that you sent in, is generally put in a “write protect” mode so that no data can be written to the drive. This insures that the original source data is not altered in any way.

Once the cloning process is complete, the original drives you sent in are set off to the side and are no longer touched. The actual recovery process is performed on the cloned copies, so nothing that is done during recovery can make the situation worse. After the drives are cloned, they will be loaded into an emmulator and destriped. Destriping is like taking the scattered pieces of a puzzle and putting them together neatly. Simply stated, destriping is taking the data scattered among the multiple drives that make up array and placing it onto a single destination drive. From there we have a single drive in which we can complete what we would consider to be a “normal” recovery. We can complete this process even at the multi-terrabyte level. If the damage to the stripe is not too severe, in most cases a complete rebuild of the directory structure and all associated data can be completed.

As mentioned earlier, RAID data recovery can be expensive. Depending on the company you contact the prices can vary considerably. Typically a RAID recovery can be priced anywhere from $800 to $3,000 per drive. A number of factors influence the cost, such as RAID type, file system, total size, situation of failure, etc. Many times attempt fees and evaluation fees are charged if the data is unrecoverable. This is understandable due to the amount of time and resources required to perform a single RAID recovery. However, in most cases the costs involved in recovering the data are not even 1% of the data’s overall value. If you are reading this article and you haven’t suffered a RAID failure, what are you waiting for? Back up your data NOW.

Blu-Ray Vs HD DVD Player – A Comparison

March 19, 2010

It’s been going on for a couple of years now. Stores have been carrying both Blu-Ray and HD DVD disks, manufacturers have been making both types of drives, and people have been talking about them both.

However, Blu-Ray players can’t play HD DVD’s, and HD DVD players can’t play Blu-Ray discs. At the end of the day, they both do the same thing (play a high-definition movie on an HDTV), so why the feud? Well, it’s a matter of who got their first. Two companies developed and successfully marketed a working high definition delivery system, and they both took off! But, as we all know, only one can survive, and in the battle of Blu-Ray vs HD DVD player computability, it seems Blu-Ray has won the fight.

The major movie rental chains have decided on Blu-Ray as their high definition disk of choice, and electronics retailers are selling Blu-Ray players instead of HD DVD players. The battle is over, and a victor has been decided: Blu-Ray won.

However, that leaves a little bit of a dilemma. Thousands of people have already bought an HD DVD player, and some movies have come out on it already. Though as many newer movies may not be coming out on this format, it is still an alive and kicking video format, even if it has lost the battle.

Though it might make more sense to choose Blu-Ray so that you’ve got more choice in movie selection, when looking at a Blu-Ray vs HD DVD player, the choice really is up to you. The price of HD movies and players has recently took a dive, so it can be a great time to buy and watch some great movies with the family in HD!

Data Recovery Downloads – Data Recovery Software

March 18, 2010

Data recovery downloads can be a complete godsend to those of us who have deleted files that just should not have been deleted. How many times have we accidentally deleted a file without realizing it until after the recycle bin was emptied? Is it too late to get it back then? Certainly not, as the data is still in your computer system.

Can data recovery downloads help out if the system crashed and had to be rebooted? Yes, because the data is still somewhere on your system. What if the computer caught some horrendous virus off of the internet and had to be totally swiped clean by reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling the operating system software? Not a problem. Believe it or not, the data is still somewhere within your computer, and data recovery downloads can help get it all back.

Consider the fact that government agencies can find whatever they are looking for on any computer, regardless of whether the hard drive was “purged of all data”. This is because all of the files and data are still within the computer system, and are retrievable. Do they have a team of techie geeks and computer hackers typing away day and night to unlock the secrets that heavily guarded computers keep within? Yes, and they write the software that agencies like the CIA, FBI and IRS all use to accomplish such tasks. With data recovery downloads, we all can do it as well.

Too often have we found ourselves in stressful situations when we lose data… we completely ruin projects, we get in conflicts with our bosses, we can even put our careers in jeopardy. Not anymore! Now it’s just a simple task of a few mouse clicks, and our data is retrieved – as simple as that. Everyone the world over is turning to data recovery downloads for their data retrieval needs, and using them with complete success. Why not do so today? Regain what was once “lost forever”, and save the day!

Can You Restore a Deleted File? The Truth About Retrieving a Lost File

March 17, 2010

While computers have become an essential tool for business and personal life new technologies always come with some problems and risks no matter what other good they give to society. The sheer amount of files and documentation we manage to accumulate on our computers can be staggering and With many of them being effectively junk that can be deleted we find yourself sorting, storing and deleting files constantly often when we are not paying an awful lot of attention and then it happens; You delete a really important file! To restore a deleted file you rush to the recycling bin only to find you have emptied it and now it is gone forever! Or is it?

Retrieving a lost file can seem like impossibility, none of the operating systems have any real way of getting them back. Some have rollback systems that can go back to earlier versions of the computer but this can often undo new information you need as well making this a poor solution. Many will simply say this is just bad luck, the file is gone; this is not completely true however.

You see files are stored differently than you might think on a computer, the data for a file is written on a hard drive and the operating system only knows it is there because it has a reference to where it is stored on the hard disk. This pointer is essential for the operating system to be able to locate the file and subsequently be able to show it as an icon on your screen for you to manipulate into folder, open, move and so on. This is just a graphical representation of your file in a way that we find easy to use. When you permanently delete a file what you actually do is remove the pointer to this file from your operating system which effectively means it does not exist as it cannot be found. However the data is still there on the hard disk it is just lost! The data will remain on the hard disk in the same location until it is overwritten by another file or program. This means that most space on a hard disk is random files and files parts that have been dereferenced and also means it is possible to get a lost file back if you know how to do it!

However to restore a deleted file you need to have a program that knows how to scan your hard disk and find a file without a pointer and then assign it one for the operating system so it can once again be used. So we see retrieving a lost file is possible with the right tools, if you have an important file sitting on your hard disk somewhere you can get it back … see below for more information!

Data Recovery Tips on How to Prevent Your Computer From Virus

March 16, 2010

In as much as you connect to the internet, download or use floppy and flash drives your computer is exposed to the risk of being infected with a virus. Some of the don’ts are

1. Purchase virus protection software, install it on your system and use. When you download a virus software from the internet you will automatically be linked to the vendor’s site and download detection code for the newest viruses. Or you can check their site from time to time to make sure your software is up to date.

2. Do not open email attachments from people you do not know. This is very important because many newer viruses spread by opening infected files over the internet as e-mail attachments. However people you know may unintentionally pass an infected file to you. It is important to note that simply opening an email with an infected attachment will not introduce the virus into your system.

3. Never download from the internet unless you have virus protection. Be careful about the site you want to download from. Consider whether it is a company with its reputation at stake or an unknown individual? Consider disabling your browser’s ability to handle pages that contain javascript, java code or active X controls. With this you would be able to view the page while you would be protected from the parts that contain active X controls and java/java script. You can always reset your browser to handle those components when you need to.

4. If you do not want to disable your browser for active X, java and javascript confirm the source before entering a site. If you know nothing about the site be watchful before entering it. There are a lot of website created by people who are idle and have nothing at stake.

6. In as much as you work with vital information on your computer keep up with relevant information so as to know when major outbreaks are reported nationally and locally on the news, in newspapers and on the web in relevant sites such as cnet.com

7. Backup your data regularly. Viruses are scary but not backing up your data regularly is scarier. Circumstance beyond your control such as flood, fire, power surges, vibration could destroy data on your hard disk unexpectedly. Backing up regularly is more important than keeping up to date on the latest virus software.

Camcorder Lens Filters – What Can They Do For You?

March 16, 2010

After investing in a good camcorder, a sales person may suggest a lens filter for your new purchase. You wonder, are they just trying to make another sale or is there a justifiable reason for considering adding on a filter? Most of us aren’t professional videographers and have no intention of producing a feature film with our camcorder, but lens filters do have a purpose even for those of us who use a camcorder only for recreational purposes.

There are many types of filters for camcorder lenses, each with their own purpose but some of the most common may be of interest to the average consumer as a way of assuring better films and protecting their investment.

Protective filters

A clear filter can be used over the lens of the camcorder to protect it from dirt, fingerprints, and other debris which may scratch or otherwise damage the lens. Replacing a damaged filter is far less expensive than replacing the lens. Using a UV lens filters can also protect against damage from ultraviolet light. Protective lenses are often attached and remain on the camcorder throughout its lifetime.

Polarizing filters

A polarizing filter can act to reduce glare caused by reflected light that bounces off of surfaces such as glass, snow, and water. These camcorder lens filters are particularly useful when filming outdoors where it can be particularly difficult to control reflective light or when shooting a film through a window.

Neutral density filters

Attaching a neutral density filter on your camcorder can help to reduce over exposure in shots as they decrease the amount of light entering the lens. The darker grey the lens filter the more light they filter out and thus the darker the resulting images in the film.

Color correction filters

There are a variety of color correction or color compensating filters that can be used to create different effects. For instance, to make a sunset more red or an ocean more blue. As these tend to be used for more creative or artistic purposes these lens filters are used less frequently by the average consumer.

Diffusion filters

Both diffusion and fog filters on a camcorder can soften images. Diffusion filters in particular are used when filming up close shots of people to flatter their faces by softening any lines or imperfections on the skin.

Although many consumers do not opt to purchase additional accessories for their camcorder, lens filters can be very useful. While some provide a very affordable alternative for protecting expensive camcorder equipment, others allow users to produce better films with less overexposure and more creative effects.
